New Orleans,LA-Flag Football Players Dies
Georgia Southern Levon Jones was killed in an altercation with
bouncers at Razoos on Bourbon St
.Levon a senior was playing
in the CoRec division and was only 25 year Old .
The Scuffle with the bouncers started when one of his teammates
was not allowed in because
of a dress code. Police on Saturday said they had no new
information to release, but witnesses
said at least four bouncers severely beat Jones.
Jones teammate was denied access for wearing a button downed
collared shirt and jeans. He
attempted to enter Razoos anyway and was pushed back. Jones then
intervened where one of the
bouncers grabbed him, he pushed away when three other bouncers pounced on
him. Jones was on
his stomach while one bouncer chocked him and the others held him
down.

Dec 24th,2004
Old Tournament, New Rules
By Stephanie T. Sosa
New Orleans,LA
On Dec. 30, the 26th Annual National Flag Football Championship
will take place on the University of New Orleans' campus. The
tournament, sponsored by Nike, Norelco, and Xbox, will host
approximately 100 college teams from around the nation. However,
this year the tournament has some new rules in place to discourage
controversies of the past.
Last year the Top two teams where from , Nunez Community College
and this raised cause for concern. The defending champions had a
diverse team with some local adults taking a one hour flag
football class, in order to be considered college students. By
past ACIC rules, these players were considered eligible for
tournament play. This year is different.
This year, in order to be eligible, each member of a team must be
enrolled as a student in their respective colleges for at least
six credit hours. They may also be eligible if they are presently
employed as a faculty or staff member of the Institution. However,
temporary employment is not recognized and each member must bring
a written document from the Human Resources Department of their
University, to prove their eligibility. These new precautions are
taking place in order to prevent the "rent-a-players" strategy
that Josh Levin refers to in his article "Why flag football is
America's dirtiest college sport," namely addressing the misuse of
ineligible athletes.
This new rule change could possibly alter the outcome of this
year's tournament, since last year Nunez teams dominated the
standings, placing the "Pelicans" at First and the "Widespread
Panic" as Runner-up. With these two teams in uncertain status,
there will be plenty of room for upcoming teams. The Highest
FlagMag ranked team entered in the tournament is #3 Yahtzee of
Pensacola, FL Community College, Yahtzee won the Pensacola
regional by crushing Florida State 40-14 in the Championship game.
Yahtzee is lead by 41 Year Old QB Doug Rogers who is the
Intramural Director. Doug States "I play because the guys still
feel that I am able to be competitive enough to help them" Mr.
Rogers ultimate goal is to play with his 15 year Old son at the
College nationals. Another team to watch out for is USM's Kappa
Sigma with there patented offense from legendary Paul Arnold.
In the women's division, the team to look for is Mexico's
Instituto Politecnico (aguilas Balancas) of Mexico City.. This team has taken the title six times but
was devastated last year by an upsetting loss, which ruined their
chances of a repeat. The loss was so devasting that they didn't show up to the World Cup
in the Dominican Republic, even though they were expected to defend their
title, as they have won the World Cup four times. Previous to last
year the Aquilas Blancas won the College National title six years
in a row.
Goin Deep will be a tough force to reckon with, as they are coming
off two World Cup qualifier wins in Houston and Dallas. Last year,
they were a finalist and this year they are ready to move up the
rankings to First Place. They are led my All American QB Tamara
Nichols and and WR Jamie Tomasini. FlagMag will be sponsoring the
Bandits of Texas State. They should be one of the top four
contenders. Western KY Winning Traditions will be returning again,
as they have been to the college nationals together as a team for
the past 3 years.
Controversy has arisen in the CoRec category as, Last Years Champs
and this years NC Regional Champs UCONN has been banned from
nationals for playing in the regional with ineligible players.
University of Connecticut won almost everything in the athletic
world last year. Besides the NCAA men's and women's championships,
they also took the Co-Rec National title with their flag football
team "Don't Even Show Up" creating havoc on their opponents.
This year, Flagmag has their favorites for the National Flag
Football Championship ranked. The top two teams, Ethnic Group and
KAS are listed at top due to their previous play in a World Cup
Qualifier. They have played against the best teams and are
therefore high ranked.
