Monterrey,Mexico-Mexican Challenge
Known for its Chair Mountain, Cerro de la silla, Monterrey played
host to the 5th Annual Mexican Challenge flag football tournament.
The Event was the IFFF’s third international event this year,
England, and Canada were the other two countries hosting events.
Eighteen teams from four different states of Mexico, Cancun-Q.Roo,
Cohuilla, Edo. de Mexico and Nuevo León, and three USA teams took
part in the event. Several teams traveled great distances to
qualify for these years World Cup Extravaganza, The Dream Team of
Colorado Springs; CO traveled the furthest, 17 hours one way in a
car. Captain, Claude Lockhart States-“We wanted to qualify early;
we know the world cup invitational tournament will be sold out
because it’s in the USA, so we didn’t want to be left out. We know
that if we wait till the end we may not make it and I don’t want
to miss this years event, last year was a blast” The women from
Cancun took a 3 hour flight to get to Monterrey.
It was the first time Monterrey hosted an international flag
football tournament, organized by the Alberto Vasquez; the games
were played at Monterrey Technological College, where the fields
are considered the best football fields in Mexico. International
Flag Football Federation President, Jim Zimolka stated-“In the six
years ive been coming to Mexico It was the best Mexican Event we
have ever had. It was well run, properly organized, referees were
good, and the fields were excellent. Everyone walked away from
this event with a good taste”.
The Monterrey Technological was huge and the football fields were
immaculate for the tournament. Friday night kicked off with a
captains meeting were teams picked there spot in the bracket, then
on Saturday everyone played round robin, two games for seeding
into Sundays single elimination rounds. The playoffs were
exciting, as the men’s final went to three overtimes. It was and
all McAllen, TX final arch rivals Colors vs. Scatbacks, Colors
struck first scoring on its first possession, a 20 yard touch grab
from QB Tuffy Martinez to WR Rick Salinas gave them the early led
6-0.The Scatbacks answered right back when QB Doni Taltantz
connected on a 30 yard pass to Gus Gardza to tie it at 6-6. Colors
then scored again on a 30 yard scamper by Beto Alvarado to go
ahead 13-6. Scatbacks ended the first half scoring when QB Danni
Talamantez jaunted 15 yards to pay dirt for the half’s final
scored which tied the game at 13.
The second half was a defensive battle as each team only scored
once. Colors scored on a 40 yard bomb to Ruben Ramirez while the
scatbacks scored on a 20 yard Td reception from Fili Taltantz to
tie the score at 20 a piece and bring the game to overtime. In
overtime, extra points, one or two determine the game. Both teams
opted for one point conversions in the first two overtimes and got
them. IN the third overtime, Scatbacks receiver Tani Talmantez
caught the ball then landed on shoulder causing the ball to pop
out and breaking his collar bone. Colors capitalized on the mishap
when Rick Salinas caught a slant pass for the game winner. It was
the second time the scatbacks finished in second at a world cup
qualifier. They lost to Blincos in Raleigh, NC in June.
The Ex Borrego’s were Mexico’s strongest team in the tournament.
They were all former college tackle football players. The team
only played with seven players in the 98F heat. In the playoffs
the edged the Aguilas of Monterrey 21-20 and then they beat the
Dream Team of Colorado 18-15 before they were knocked off by the
Scatbacks. The Aguilas of Saltillo also represented Mexico well as
they are the younger generation of talent. In the playoffs the
knocked off the Extroyanos 21-8 and then the Titanes of Mexico
City 33-8 before they were eliminated by Colors.
In the Women’s Championship it was an all Mexico City final as
power house Aquilas Blancas won easily 14-0 over Mexico Blue.
Maritza Zamora scored both td’s.The Aguilas did loose on Saturday,
a forfeit for showing up late. The IFFF has no tolerance for
tardiness, even if you’re a four time World Cup champion stated
IFFF president Jim Zimolka, who was there overseeing the event. In
round robin matchup’s there was a classic as hometown arch rivals
Tigres took on the Leonas. When these two teams met on the field
for tackle over 30,0000 people attend the game. It was a defensive
battle as the games on score came on a 20 yard td catch by a
tigres receiver.
Tournament director Alberto Vazquez is to be commended for a well
organized event. At 38 years old he has been diagnosed with Lou
Gehrig’s disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) ALS, degenerative
nerve disorder. ALS affects the nerve fibers in the spinal cord
which control voluntary movement.Alberto has been involved with
Flag/Touch football for over 10 years and has created the local
league in Monterrey after he moved there from Mexico City.at 6’3”
Alberto played TE in college for the Vikings in tackle football.
In two short years, Alberto has 20 teams playing in his local
league.
