CANADIAN TOUCH NATIONALS-EH
After six grueling qualifying
tournaments, the end of the season has finally come in the great
white north. Seventy five teams from throughout Canada took part
in the annual 7Man No Contact touch football national tournament
held at the former Military base. Twelve Canadian size football
fields(65 x110 yards) were used in the three day tournament.
In the Men's Top Division, Tier 1, the Ottawa Canadians won back
to back titles by crushing the Piranha 34-8 in the title
game. In the semis the Canadians also demolished the jets
44-6. The were up 38-0 at the half and the game was called early
in the 4th quarter.
In the Women's Top division, the Ottawa Roadrunners
upset Canada's #1 Team by trouncing the Toronto Shock 35 -2
for the National Title. In the Semis the Shock knocked off the
Devils while the Roadrunners defeated the Montreal Blizzard.
The Men's A Title was the Pats defeating the Assassins
in OT 36-34, while in the BB Title game the Mavericks beat the
Hitmen 20-12.
In the Women's B Title game, the Montreal Raiders defeated
the Edmonton Calypso while in the C Championship the Ottawa
Fury defeated the Montreal Chiefs
All in All, the tournament was a great success and with
temps in the 60's and a beer tent, the games were enjoyable. There
was quite abit of talk amongst the Canadians regarding the World
Cup this year in Miami. The National team held a practice on
Friday, as the are gearing up for the Ft Lauderdale World Cup
qualifier Nov 13/14th. Canadian IFFF representative Fred Lachance
says" we are taking 25 guys to Ft lauderadale to compete in
7man and 4man. We want to beat the Americans on there own turf so
they have no more excuses. There is only one thing better than
winning the World Cup Title, and that's doing it on USA Soil"
USA IFFF Representative Jim Zimolka, States, "Canada is
our biggest Challenge. Team USA will have a new look this year as
only 12 players from last year are returning. Well be looking at
the upcoming qualifiers for new team members. Losing the World Cup
title was heartbreaking, losing it on our own soil will be
unbearable"

Ottawa,Canada-Fountain of Youth is Found in CANADA-EH
Is the fountain of youth in the great White north? Is it really
true men in there 60's are playing Touch Football? How can
this be when players in the USA retire at 35? Maybe the Canadians
have more obsession for Americas pastime. What ever the
reason is there are over 10 players in Ottawa alone over the age
of 50 playing touch football, and the ring leader is Ed Laverty
who is president of both the Ontario Touch Football
Association and The Ottawa Nepean Touch Football
League. Ed is the most respected guy in Canada, as he has
over 100 teams in his local league and a tournament series that
attracts more than 70 teams at five events throughout the year. So
why is Ed liked so much? He has pure passion for the Sport,
and runs a great tournament that everyone enjoys. So when you
think its time to retire, think of Ed Laverty, and don't hang up
those cleats until your 70.
