NORTH CONWAY, N.H-Mudbowl Results

. — If there is any sport that can be made more interesting with rain, then mud football is probably it.
However, last weekend’s 2006 World Championships of Mud Football at Hog Coliseum in North Conway managed to avoid most of the rain that swept through the area Saturday, Sept. 9, and when all was said and done, the Nashua Mud Gumbys had emerged much muddier, but with the title of World Champions of Mud Football attached to their name for the first time since 1999.
This year’s charitable games featured a theme of Mud Bowl Salutes Mudmerica: Great Moments in Mudmerican History, 1776-2006, and the Gumbys carved a new page in Mud Bowl history at that.
The buffed squad used relentless pressure defense and a strong offensive game to outscore their opponents 74-2 in four games and claimed their second World Champion title with a 20-0 win over the hometown Mt.Washington Valley Hogs in in the final game Sunday afternoon, Sept. 10.
The Hogs themselves, 11-time champions, but not having won a championship since 1992, and in the finals for the first time since 2003, battled a hard road to get to the finals as they looked for their first title since 1992.
The revitalized, Capt. Wayne McDonald-led Hogs beat the Peabody Predators 18-0 in the opening game Friday morning, Sept. 8, of the three-day, 13-game, double-elimination tournament and followed that up with a 20-6 win over the Merrimack Valley Mud Cats later Friday afternoon, .
The Mud Gumbys scored a 16-2 win over the Carrabasset Valley Rats of Kingfield, Maine, the original mud football team, Friday afternoon and proceeded to knock off the defending champion North Shore Mud Sharks of Beverly, Mass., later that day, 14-0.
With the two wins each, the Hogs and Gumbys earned a break from competition on Saturday, advancing straight to Sunday’s final three games.

Hogs and Sharks
On Sunday, the Hogs took on the defending Mudshark champs in the first game of the day.
Hogs quarterback Jason Veno hit Scott Butters with a touchdown pass on the team’s second drive, halfway through the first half of Sunday morning’s contest. With the two-point conversion, the Hogs took an 8-0 lead.
The Sharks wasted no time in answering, getting a touchdown of their own to close to within two points, but the extra point attempt was broken up and the Hogs led, 8-6.
The hometown team gave its fans something to cheer about just before the half, as Veno hit former Kennett standout Jeff Perry for a touchdown to make it 14-6 at the half.
The Sharks came charging out of the gate in the second half, scoring on their first possession. Again, they failed to make the two-point conversion and trailed 14-12.
The Hogs handed the ball back on an interception with five minutes to go, but the defending champs could do nothing and they were sent packing and for the first time in a long time, the finals would not include perennial Mud Bowl MVP Adam Gillen.
The Gumbys then proceeded to dominate the Mud Cats in the second game Sunday, scoring 18 points in the second half, including one of the prettiest plays of the tournament, a long pass down the sidelines on the first play of a drive in the final minutes. The Gumbys took the 24-0 win and advanced to play the Hogs in the finals.
The team from Nashua continued its shutout streak in the final game, though the Hogs put the pressure on early.
However, halfway through the first half, Don Chambers, the founder of the Gumbys, caught a touchdown pass and with a two-point conversion the Gumbys had an 8-0 lead and all the points they would need.
The Gumbys appeared to have a touchdown in the final five minutes, but an inadvertent whistle called the play back and they couldn’t score.
They didn’t let that stop them however, as the Gumbys marched down the field in the final few minutes and put the ball in the end zone for a 14-0 halftime lead.
An interception by Keith Ouellette gave the Hogs another chance to get on the board, but the Gumbys got a pick of their own and marched for a touchdown in the final two minutes to up the lead to 20-0, where it would end.
Chambers noted that the Gumbys are all friends who know each other pretty well, which helps the team chemistry.
“We’re a team of friends, young and old,” said Chambers. “We all know each other and play together or against each other.”
The Gumbys were playing in their 12th Mud Bowl and Chambers admitted that it had seemed like a millennium since they had been at the top, even though in truth, it had only been since 1999, when they had won the title to prove that the future was green, as in Mud Gumby green.
“It’s been a while,” he said. “We needed one [a championship] to keep the juices going.”
He pointed out that a number of the players, including himself, were on the team for the 1999 title run, but others were new to the team since that point.
Leading the way on offensive for the Gumbys was quarteback Chris Cayer, who was better know as Cletus the Slack-jawed Yokel. He also played a solid defensive game. Dave Martineau also shined on defense for the Gumbys.
For the Hogs, an influx of new players in the last few years helped lead to their resurgence, but savvy veterans also played a big part in the Hogs’ run to the title game.
“We had a bunch of new guys and we played well as a team,” said longtime Mud Bowl and Hogs veteran Mike Lynch, who did just about everything on the weekend, including officiating and working the line crew. “It’s great playing with kids and the attitudes the kids have,” he said, noting that his son, Blair, has done a lot to recuit new Hogs. [Mike and Blair are just a few of the father-and-son combinations on the
Lynch said the team has worked well together in preparation for the big event, making trips to Sugarloaf to get in practice time, but he said the big goal is to help in the fund-raising efforts for local charities.
“We’re going to try to bump it over $50,000 a year,” he said optimistically.
The Hogs were led by quarterback Veno, who played a solid game. Jeff Perry and Scott Butters also had good games on offense for the Hogs.

Opening days
In other games on Friday, the Mud Cats beat the Cumberland (R.I.) Muckaneers 20-6 and in a rematch of last year’s championship game, the Sharks beat the 16-time champion Muddas Football Club in a hotly-contested contest 18-14.
Saturday saw the Muckaneers oust the Predators with a 14-6 win and the Muddas won an overtime thriller against the Rats, 18-12.
The Mud Cats then defeated the Muckaneers 8-6 and the Sharks beat the Muddas for the second time on the weekend, 6-0 in the lowest scoring game of the tournament.

Other action
While football is the main focus of Mud Bowl, there was lots going on besides the games.
While road construction on Main Street in North Conway Village put the squash on this year’s parade, a team skit competition was held at the Hog Coliseum Saturday morning in its place.
The hometown Hogs took first place, the Muddas took second place and the Gumbys finished in third. Prizes were awarded by Mud Bowl’s sponsor, Amoskeag Beverages Inc.,distirbutors of Lite Beer by Miller, to the teams’ respective charities.
For the spirit competition, the Gumbettes came out on top, making a joyous ride back to Nashua for players and cheerleaders. The Mudbassadors from Mt.Washington Valley came home second in the spirit competition.
Again the weekend included the synchronized mud swimming work of Del Bean, Desiree Repasse and friends, as well as a cheerleader football game between the Mudbassadors and the Mud Kittens. Imari and the Sahara Desert Bellydancers of Bridgton, Maine, also made another shimmering (and gyrating!) appearance in the mud Saturday.
There was even a mudtrimonial moment Saturday, as Mudbassador Careyann King proposed via a sideline placard to beau Dennis Lufkin of  the Hogs. he said ... YES!
There were many cheerleading exhibitions at halftime and between games and the Mud Bowl Ball was held at the Cranmore Pub Saturday night. Kathy Woods of the Mud Kittens was chosen as this year’s Mud Bowl Queen and proudly wore her banner and crown all day Sunday, taking over from the reigning Queen, the Mudda M&Ms’ Anna Paul.

Helps charities
Since its inception in North Conway in 1976, Mud Bowl has raised more than $450,000 for local charitiable organizations. The primary beneficiaries are North Conway Community Center, Carroll County Retired Senior Volunteer Program and North Conway Day Care Center.
Press coverage was strong, with coverage by the Manchester Union Leader, the Concord Monitor, TV’s “Inside Edition” and Valley Vision and RSN tv16. to name a few.
Mud Bowl was also featured on Australian radio and on the Star Channel on the Sirius satellite radio network.
Jackie Howe, ticket chair, estimated the weekend’s attendance at 3500.
“Other than the rain late Saturday afternoon, which was brief, it went swimmingly well,” said Howe. “We do not have the final figures, but I would estimate that we will be just a bit below last year’s, probably at about $26,000. We did hear many people asking for the parade to come back, which we will definitely do. But I think the skits added to the festive atmosphere in the Coliseum, so perhaps we can have the teams that win on Friday and who have Saturday off come and present the skits from the parade in Saturday’s action at Hog Coliseum.”
Howe said the Mud Bowl committee is already thinking of possible themes for next year — including “Mud Africa,” which could lend itself to the Mud Jungle Book, Mud Tarzan and many more ideas.
Hike One, Hike Two, Me Mudzan, you Jane. See you at next year’s Mud Bowl, always the weekend after Labor Day.                      s

World Mud Bowl Championships Sept. 8-10
Welcome to Mud Bowl 2006; Celebrate ‘Great Moments in Mudmerican History, 1776-2006

By Tom Eastman

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. -- Mud Bowl 2006 will get patriotic with a theme of “1776-2006: Mud Bowl Celebrates Mudmerica, Great Moments in Mudmerican History” when the World Championships of Mud Football splash off in North Conway’s Hog Coliseum Friday through Sunday, Sept. 8 through 10.
From George Mudshington and the Mudmerican Mudolution to Lewis and Clark's explorations in search of the Mudwest Passage, spectators will get an entertaining if slightly revisionist dose of great moments of Mudmerican history when they come to the games.
The games will feature a team best theme portrayal contest at Hog Coliseum from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Hog Coliseum Saturday, Sept. 9; cheerleader competitions, the world's best synchronized mud swimming, and more.
(The team theme competition this year will replace the annual Tournament of Mud Parade, which is being postponed for one year only due to ongoing road construction in the nearby area. Admission to the theme contest only is $2 for adults.)
Now in its 30th year in North Conway, the colorful 13-game, double elimination mud football extravaganza includes three days of exciting football action, featuring eight teams from throughout New England. The family-oriented event benefits local charities, with more than $450,000 having been raised over the years.
Patrons may use their admission ticket as their entry in several raffle drawings that will be held throughout the weekend. Three-day tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate. Daily tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12. A family pass is available for $15 for two parents and two children, with a charge of $2 for each additional child. Children ages 8 and under are admitted free.

COLORFUL HISTORY

Mud Bowl has now been celebrated in North Conway for three decades now -- ever since a ragtag bunch of players banded together to form the Mt. Washington Valley Hogs in 1975 to play in a tourney in Sugarloaf, USA, in Maine. The Hogs won the first of their 11 titles that year, and North Conway hosted its first tourney in 1976 as a result. (In those days, the winning team got to host the Mud Bowl the following year).
That 1976 game was played in a corn field. After North Conway volunteers built Hog Coliseum in 1981, organizers in 1983 decided to have all games played in North Conway --  permanently making the Mt. Washington Valley the mud football capital of the world.
In addition to zany costumes and floats, and great mud football action, celebrating “Mudstalgia”this year’s games on Saturday will once again feature Imari and her Sahara Desert Belly Dancers of Bridgton, Maine.
Also expected to return for halftime appearances are Del “The Unknown Mud Man” Bean, Tony Sorbera and their synchronized mud-swimming mud dancers, cheerleaders from all the teams, and many others.

     SHARKS TO DEFEND TITLE

At the 30th anniversary Mudstalgia Mud Bowl last year, -- also the 30th anniversary of the release of the  film, “Jaws” -- it was only fitting that the North Shore Mudsharks of Beverly, Mass., won their first-ever World Mud Bowl title at North Conway’s Hog Coliseum, defeating the 2004 defending 16-time champion Muddas Football Club 20-18 in a dramatic final worthy of a Steven Mudberg thriller. The win capped an action-packed Mud Bowl “Mudstalgia”-themed event
Expected to return with the Mudsharks and Muddas this year the previously-mentioned, hometown 11-time champion Mt. Washington Valley Hogs; the 2001 champion Merrimack Mudcats of Franklin, N.H., the Peabody Predators of Peabody, Mass.; the Carrabassett Valley Rats of Kingfield, Maine; and the Cumberland Muckaneers of Rhode Island.

OLD CAR CLUB SHOW/DOG SHOW: Don’t miss the Carroll County Kennel Club 63rd and 64th All-Breed Dog Shows and Obedience Trials, Sept. 9-10, at nearby Hussey Field in North Conway. It is one of New England’s oldest and most respected dog shows. Besides the competition of breeds, two new events have been added this year. On Saturday, Sept. 9, a Puppy Gala for puppies 6 to 12 months old will offer a special show for the littlest dogs. On Sunday, Sept. 10, a new AKC event, Rally Obedience, offers a fun event for dogs and handlers.  There’s plenty of food for all and vendors on site. This is a great spectator event for those looking to learn more about breeds that make great pets.  Info: (207) 697-2353.
The Mt. Washington Valley Old Car Club’s 14th annual Car Show at Settlers’ Green OVP (356-7031) is set for Sunday, Sept. 10.

MILLER LITE PARTIES: Amoskeag Beverages, official Mud Bowl sponsors for the past 24 years, and distributors of Miller Lite, the original low-carb beer, and Miller Genuine Draft, is once again hosting several Mud Bowl receptions throughout the Valley during Mud Bowl Weekend.
The schedule includes parties Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8 and 9, and

ANNOUNCERS: Who are those guys? Actually, who is that guy and that woman?
It’s Audley Williams and Samantha Wilde of WPKQ and WLNH, respectively.
Samanatha joined the announcing team of Audley and Bill Wilson last year. Bill left for points west and sends his best to all, noting that Mud Bowl remains dear to his heart.
“The crew of volunteers behind the success of this event over the years is truly remarkable, and I will miss everyone,” noted Bill, who moved his young family west due to a new job opportunity.
Welcome to Samantha, thanks to Audley, and kudos also to our public address sound team of dad Michael and son Chris Morrison of Buffalo Sound.

PARKING: Those visiting Mt. Washington Valley this summer need to be advised that the N.H. Department of Transportation is undertaking its rebuilding of North Conway Village’s Main Street through early October.
The state is also replacing the Scenic Vista Visitor Center in Intervale this season with plans for a spring ’07 opening.
The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Mt. Washington Valley Preservation Association, and the town are working with the state and area merchants to allow for the transition with both of these projects to be as smooth as possible.
“We want everyone to understand that other than the occasional loss of certain areas for parking on a temporary basis, it will be business as usual,” said Doug Holmes of the Mt. Washington Valley Preservation Association, the group which has spearheaded an effort to beautify and upgrade Main Street as part of the rebuilding project.
Parking will be impacted at times along parts of Main Street as the state will maintain two open lanes of traffic during reconstruction of the roadway.
Merchants and the chamber are therefore encouraging all to use alternative parking sites when necessary. One good option is behind the Eastern Slope Inn off River Road — heading north on Route 16, turn left at the intersection of Main Street (Route 16) and River Road and then make your first turn left after the railroad overpass into the parking lot for the inn. A pedestrian tunnel leads you to Norcross Village and North Conway’s Schouler Park.
Another alternative is to park at the Depot Street public parking lot, located just south of the village’s shopping district between the North-South Road  and Route 16.
