College Nationals Invade the Big Easy
New Orleans,LA - With weather and field conditions perfect, a
whopping 127 teams met for the 1999 NIRSA College Nationals held at the University of New
Orleans from Dec. 27-30.
The College Nationals, which began in 1979, have evolved into one of the country's premier
flag football events. The 1999 tournament drew 57 teams from the Men's division, 52
Women's teams, 19 Co-Rec teams and 16 teams from the Men's Open division.
The tournament's most memorable moment? Perhaps it was the Hitmen, who scored with 18
seconds remaining to defeat the Hurricanes, a two-time defending champion in the Men's
Open division.
Other memorable performances came from the Wizards of South Florida, who danced the hokey
pokey before each game. In the Women's division, Arizona State needed just five players to
defeat Tennessee in the first round playoffs. (Seven players is the standard number).
Team Aguilas Blancas/FlagMag.com of Mexico City, Mexico, won the Women's division
championship for the third consecutive year. Four teams from Mexico participated in the
Women's division, including three teams which made a grueling 28-hour bus ride from Mexico
City to New Orleans.
Other notables from the tournament:
Three regional winners did not participate (OSU Raiders, Tribe and Old Dominion). The
Akron women played against Western Kentucky in a 6-on-6 matchup.
Most popular beverage?Daquiri
The most popular prizes were T-shirts, hats and bumper stickers courtesy of FlagMag.com.
The College Nationals have continued to expand since the inaugural Men's division
tournament in 1979. The Women's division was added in 1980, and the Co-Rec division was
implemented in 1985, followed by the Open division in 1993.
Next month, the World Flag Football Tournament will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from Feb.
24-28.

Nirsa Directors Mike Bond and Brian Davis.

JZ-When did you start playing Flag Football?
PA- In 1986 at the Univ. of Florida intramural program, Pi Lambda Phi Mandatory
Pledge flag football program.
JZ-What position do you play?
PA-I Play QB, and Outside LB or Safety.
JZ-How have you become so successful?
PA- I created an offense that's wide open, no one screens, everyone is in a pass route
with short passes, with multiple options and laterals once the reception has been made.
JZ-How many plays do you have?
PA- We have 29 Plays with 7 Checkoffs. The most famous play we have was made up by my
brother Mr.C.
JZ- What do you think of the Five year eligibility rule being enforced this
year?(Participants may only play in 5 tournaments in the collegiate div.)
PA- Every year I played at Nationals I was a full time student, I have always been a
legit player.
JZ-Will the OSU Raiders play in the open div at the College nationals?
PA- The team has already won the Collegiate Columbus regional, which pays for the
whole trip so the team will play in the collegiate div. with out me. The team will be lead
by Otis Chip Smith.
JZ- Will you be there?
PA- IM going to spend the Holiday at home with my wife Mary Joe and one year old son Chase
for the first time in 11 years!
JZ-Whats next for Paul Arnold?
PA-USFTL Nationals in Orlando, Florida Jan 15-17th.
JZ- Will You Play for Team USA at the World Cup in Cancun, Mexico?
PA- I would love to, I look forward to it.

With 1:40 remaining UNC scored to Make it 38-37 , The extra point for one point was

sacked??? This game should of gone to Overtime!!! A well played game. UNC never complained
