Flying L's -FT Lauderdale,FL
Florida State Champs
June 5th,2003
Clearwater, FL-USA makes Headway with Girls Flag Football
The USA is finally making headway with women's Flag Football
with Florida hosting its first state championship for girls high
school flag football. The USA is far behind Mexico and Canada when
it comes to Girls Flag Football. Both Mexico and Canada have had
Girls High School Flag Football for the past 10 years, while in the
USA only Florida currently has a program for women. Canada and
Mexico dominate in Women's Flag Football simply because they have
more experience.
Mexico has won the last four World Cup's and has won the
College Nationals for the past six years, while Canada is always a
close second. This year Women's Flag Football made a major leap in
the USA, with over 90 schools participating in girls Florida High
School Flag Football program. Will a few girls from Florida make
Team USA and contribute to win its first World Cup Title? Can the
USA beat Canada or Mexico? Will Team USA loose to emerging
countries like Venezuela and France were more and more women are
playing? Can Team USA women finally bring home the gold at
this years World Cup. Hopefully the girls from Florida answer the
call, and bring back the Cup to the USA . Team USA is Selected from
World Cup Qualifiers.
May 28th, 2003
Clearwater, FL
Florida hosted its first State Championship for Girls Flag
Football. The game played was 7man no contact, but amidst
controversy. The Florida High School Activities
Association changed the rush from 5 yards to one yard
despite the fact that over 70 schools played the previous
two years with the 5 yard rush. The rule change angered
several schools as the change was clearly to favor the 10
schools from the north who played the previous year with
the one yard rush. Spanish Rivers Head Coach Steve Spaggs
resigned in protest of the rule change, and the
International Flag Football
Federation denounced the rule change as a major
set back.
7man no Contact with a 5 yard rush is the International
Game, played by over ten women's countries.
The Top
eight teams in the state met in Clearwater this past weekend
for the single elimination tournament. The Tournament MVP was
Flying Ls' QB
Evette
Young who threw for two td passes, and intercepted a
pass with 40 seconds remaining to preserve the win for Ft
Lauderdale who ended the season at 14-1. Last year the
Flying L's were the Broward county champs. Lake Worth
scored its only TD on a 10 yard run by Melissa Savage.
Lake Worth participated in a Women's Flag Football
Tournament in Montreal Canada In July of 2001,where the
team went 0-3 but three players played for Team USA an
gained valuable experience; WR -Erin Brant,LB- Nicole
Musco and QB Melissa Savage.
