Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Fort Lauderdale spoiled Dillard's opportunity at a Four-peat as the
Flying
L's won the Broward County Women's Flag Football Championship with a
26-19 win at Lockhart Stadium. The Dillard Panthers had their sites
set early on
repeating as champions, but Ft. Lauderdale had other ideas.
The Panthers scored the first 12 points with their high
powered offense. It
looked as if the Flying L's were overmatched on both sides of the
ball.
Dillard's Bianca Burton threw the first touchdown pass to Amanda
Ray and on
the ensuing drive she also made a huge interception that allowed the
Panthers to score a quick 12.
The Flying L's did not give up, as on the following
drive QB Evette Young
found Kirsten Harris with a 15 yard TD pass. Young then tied the
game on her
schools next offensive series, by running in a TD from 18 yards out.
Dillard opened up the second half with a scoring drive,
as Ray caught
another TD pass, this one for 11 yards. But the Flying L's were able
to tie
up the score with another score, and to go up with less then 2
minutes to go
with a 19 yard pass from Evette Young to Christina Botnick. Evette
Young
then was able to seal Dillard's fate, as she came up with a huge
interception for Ft. Laud at Dillard's 30 yard line.
This was not the game for Dillard. This night belonged to Fort
Lauderdale.
The Flying L's coach, Tom Holste, is a flag player himself. His game
is
7on7, FRPA rules. Earlier in the evening, in the Semi-Final games,
Fort Lauderdale defeated Western High 18-12 and Dillard dominated
Plantation High 25-6.

Ft Lauderdale, FL - Broward County
High School Flag Football will be sanctioned
for next year in the state of
Florida. This year the Championships are only based at a County
level. Try
telling these girls that these are just warm ups to a State
Championship.
Try convincing them that the games have little meaning this year.
Try
again... Watching the Flanagan Falcons play the McArthur Mustangs in
a
regular season match, you would think this was a playoff run for the
State
Championship this year.
The match featured the undefeated Flanagan High team going against a
scrappy
McArthur High team fighting hard for playoff rights next week. At
halftime,
with the score 8-6 in Flanagan's favor, you could see the
determination in
both teams eyes to make the 2nd half their own. McArthur took the
lead in
the 2nd half, 13-6 , with a tenacious defense and the help of their
coaches,
who include 2 assistant coaches well versed in 7on7 Flag Football.
Coach
Moore has her two assistants, Todd Jones of Team USA Flag Football
and
Derrick Milton, both who play on the Ruff Ryders 7on7 Flag Football
team
from Ft Lauderdale, FL.
The Falcons of Flanagan High kept their undefeated streak intact,
showcasing
their high powered Offense, and with a little help from some key
mistakes
made by the Mustangs late in the game. The final score, Flanagan
High 14,
McArthur High 13. Flanagan sits primed for a high seed in this years
County
Playoffs starting next week, and McArthur plays two more home games
before
their season ends.
But, don't try to tell any of these girls, their coaches, or their
fans that
these games do not mean anything... You will be in for a rude
awakening.

Palm Beach Gardens triumph in County
Championship Game 25-13
By Paul Hoover
The night belonged to the Gators. It did not matter that they were
the
underdog and had 4 losses on the season. It didn't matter that they
were
playing the team that had defeated Spanish River (3 time County
Champions) a few nights before. They came into Dick Mear Stadium,
home of the Palm Bch Lakes Rams, with a positive attitude. They went
home Flag Football County Champions.
Palm Beach Gardens, who had played their way into the Finals from a
#6 seed, continued their winning ways with speed on offense, and a
stingy defense.Their game strategy against the powerful Rams, to
keep it close until the 4th quarter, paid off as they scored their
final 13 points in the last 8
minutes.
The Rams offense set the tone early, as they scored first on a 7
yard TD
pass from QB Taneya Edwards to her TE Malikka Kemp. The extra point
was no good, making the score 6-0 Rams.
The Gators came back on the next series to answer with a score of
their own.QB Haley Herritt (Co-MVP) scored on a QB run from 4 yards
out to tie the score at 6-6. This was set up by a huge 3rd and long
pass from Herritt to a streaking Marissa McConihay for 46 yards. The
extra point by Melissa Legg gave Palm Bch Gardens their first lead,
7-6.
The Rams offense was held to a 4 and out after the ensuing kick off,
and the
Gators offense again made the most of it. After a 42 yard pass was
called
back on an offensive penalty, Herritt once again found her favorite
WR
Marissa McConihay (Co MVP) with a 58 yard touchdown pass. The extra
point was batted down in the end zone, 13-6 Gators.
Both teams defenses tightened by not allowing either team to get a
first
down for the remainder of the Half. Rams coach James Wheeler made
some adjustments to take the speedy #27 McConihay out of the game.
It seemed to work, for awhile.
In the second half, the Rams used their newly acquired Option style
offense
to drive the field, which ended with a 3 yard TD pass from Edwards
to #31
Floreisha Allen. The extra point, a QB keeper, was good. Now it was
a 13-13 game.
With 8 minutes to go, the Gators QB Herritt threw another TD strike,
this
time 20 yards to #31 Melissa Legg, to give Gardens the lead for good.
They
added another score, a QB run for 17 yards by Herritt, with less
then 2:30
to play, to give them their final score of 25-13. Lakes made a
valiant
attempt to score on their final drive, but their hopes were short
lived as
Haley Herritt, playing safety as well for the Gators, intercepted a
pass at
the 2 yard line to stop any attempt at a comeback.
"Our defense kept us in the game, and we started executing after
halftime"
Rams coach James Wheeler said. "But in the 4th quarter we lost a lot
of
steam. That win against Spanish River took a toll on our team".
The FHSAA has approved for next year a statewide playoff for Girl's
Flag
Football at the High School level. But, this years Championship
belongs to
the Palm Beach Garden Gators. "We are the New England Patriots of
flag
football" says Gators coach Daphne Freas. "No one believed we could
do it, except for us". According to Coach Freas, they will
lose 10 seniors this
year. So, this was their chance to show all of Palm Beach County
never to
count out the underdogs...
Is a state championship waiting in the wings for one of these Palm
Beach
County schools? Only time will tell. But, this year belonged to the
girls of
Palm Beach Gardens...

At the quarterfinals of the Girls Flag Football played at Blum
Stadium in Palm Beach Gardens,
Florida, two of the most awesome flag football teams vyed for a
playoff spot. The quarterfinals were extremely competitive having
two of the most impressive teams from Palm Beach Gardens.

allow them a win even though she made a touchdown. Hailey Harriet
intercepted a pass for Gardens making Coaches O'Conner, Wilkes, and
Freas elated.
Nicole Maestri from Gardens said,
"It took us three games to beat Dwyer and we knew all along we could
do it. They are really good-but we played better today."
Gardens girls were overjoyed by this win-even high-fiving this
