Apopka High School-
May 2nd,2005
Its down to the sweet sixteen for the High
school girls playoffs,.
The High School has changed over the last two years as the
game originally was played with World Cup rules, but two
years ago
FHSAA changed the rules. The game is now more suited for
speed more or less a track meet as the team with the most
speed is
most likey to win.
Seabreez knocked off last years State champs Apopka 20-19
so there is no chance of a repeat champion, but last years
runners up Dillard and semi finalist Lake Worth and Dwyer
still have a shot at the title. Dr Phillips and Lake Worth
are the only undefeated teams. The game to watch this
round is
Dwyer vs Royal Palm
Beach at Royal Palm. Both teams have participated in World
Cup
Tournaments, with Royal Palm having more experience on
there side playing in several preseason tournaments.
Royal Palm Beach will get the edge in this game as four
players played for Team USA this past year, who lost to
five time defending World Champions
Mexico
19-18 in OT.
Brittany Tesauro, Sam Walker , Kelly Heslin,
Stephanie Boraiko, all played for Team USA, however
Tesaura and Walker are both
out with injuries.
Royal Palm
Lost to Dwyer 8-6 in their first game of the year.

FOOTBALL
"It's Not just a man's sport anymore"
by Stan Goldstein
Head Flag Football Coach - Chiles H.S.
"Ahh, Springtime Tallahassee" … a time for the sun to
awaken from a long winter nap, a time for the gray of
winter to give way to the vibrant colors of spring. Sounds
of lawn mowers start up again, the laughter of kids
playing outdoors fills the air, the sounds of baseball and
softball engulf the city. Swimming, sunbathing, gardening,
and picnics start to find their way back into peoples
lives. But in Tallahassee, these activities take a back
seat to the 2nd favorite sporting activity in North
Florida, "Spring Football", 2nd only to "Fall Football" in
appeal. But wait a minute boys, your show is NOT the only
show in town anymore.
The FHSAA (Florida High School Athletic Association) added
"Girls Flag Football" as a state wide sanctioned sport.
Tallahassee public schools, Chiles, Leon, Lincoln, &
Rickards, fielded teams. FAMU will also join the field.
Statewide, schools participating were from Jacksonville,
Daytona, Orlando, Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater, Palm Beach,
Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Hollywood.
Sixteen Districts were set up throughout the state of
Florida. Teams in each district can play up to 12 regular
season games. The regular season is followed by a District
Tournament, a Regional Final, and in culmination, a "Final
Eight" tournament is held (this year it will be in Boca
Raton).
Chiles High School's 2005 team has a record of 10-2 with
seven shut-outs. These include victories over East Lake
(27-0) and Palm Harbor University (21-0). Chiles will play
Lincoln on Wednesday, April 27, 2005 in the District
Tournament. The winner will play the winner of the Leon vs
Rickards on Friday, April 29, 2005 for the District
Championship.
The evolution of this sport began six years ago ('99-'00)
as an experimental sport, stemming from the ever
controversial Title IX issue of providing equitable
opportunities for females in high school sports. It was
another avenue of opportunity for girls to proudly
represent their school(s), while participating in an
activity that has proven to be very popular amongst the
girls whose only football experience to that point was the
annual "Powder Puff" tournament that pitted grade levels
(within the same school) against each other. By comparison
to the other sports on campus, it is a relatively
inexpensive sport to operate, which made its'
implementation a little easier to justify during a time
period where a tight budget was imperative to the school
system.
Not everyone, however, embraced the idea of implementing
the activity. Several coaches, county-wide, questioned why
the district would implement a sport in which there was no
opportunity for scholarship. Some coaches were concerned
over having to share athletes with other sports. Coaches
sharing athletes were concerned about the increased
possibility of injury.
Finding space to practice on an already crowded campus was
another concern. But, nevertheless, the sport became a
reality. Chiles only had 18 girls elect to play the first
year
('99-'00). The sport has grown in popularity very, very
quickly. Last year, Chiles had 102 girls sign up to play.
The Timberwolves were fortunate enough to reach the "State
Finals" two year's ago and look forward to the challenge
of a new season.
Flag Football at Chiles emphasizes attention to detail and
"FUNdamentals", always keeping in mind the first three
letters of the word … Coach Goldstein feels if they are
having fun learning and participating, then hard work and
dedication are an easy sell … and a significant degree of
success is almost a certainty.
