Defense propels FPC
PALM
COAST -- The offense has carried Flagler Palm Coast
flag football this spring, but it was defense that
helped the Bulldogs hold off stubborn Neptune Beach
Fletcher Tuesday night for the District Championship
at Sal Campanella Memorial Stadium.
FPC won 32-12 and had
things under control for most of the game. Kaley
Durrance made a huge defensive play midway through
the fourth quarter when she returned an interception
70 yards for an insurance touchdown when the
Senators threatened to punch within one touchdown of
catching the Bulldogs.
"We
just weren't executing in the second half," FPC
coach Jim Gambone said. "Kaley bailed us out with
that interception and touchdown she scored."
The
pick was the second touchdown scored by the defense
in the game. Linebacker Jenna Ecker also snared a
shovel pass on Fletcher's opening series and
returned the pick for a score to give FPC an early
7-0 advantage.
Gambone's assessment of his team's first half play
was right on the money. In addition to Ecker's
score, the Bulldogs scored twice more in the first
half on touchdown passes by Kristen Huffman thrown
to Ecker and Shanese Buffin. Durrance also had a
first quarter interception and FPC a 20-0 lead
almost before the Senators knew what hit them.
But
Fletcher's talented quarterback Belia Rodriguez
engineered a drive covering 65 yards, completing
five passes and rushing on three plays. FPC
responded with a late first half touchdown over the
middle from Huffman to Buffin for a 26-6 halftime
lead. · FPC also won the front end of a flag
football tripleheader by downing Jacksonville
Sandalwood 12-7. Fletcher handled St. Joseph 18-6 in
the middle game of the flag football tripleheader.
St. Petersburg
Fleet duo leads Lakewood to state
ST.
PETERSBURG - The scouting report on Lakewood is
fairly simple. Stop Kquanise Byrd and Innekia Reedy.
Doing it, however, is much more difficult. St.
Petersburg found out just how hard it is Tuesday
night. Byrd dominated and Reedy dazzled as the
Spartans defeated the Green
Devils 26-6 to advance to the state flag
football quarterfinals.
Byrd
set the tone early by capping an eight play, 75-yard
drive with a 4-yard run. In the second quarter, Byrd
(4-for-6, 45 yards) threw for two more scores,
connecting with Latesha Johnson from 9 yards to give
Lakewood a 14-0 lead. Shereka Boone caught Byrd's
other touchdown pass.
Reedy
provided the play of the game late in the third
quarter when she returned a punt 63 yards to make it
26-0.
"I
always do that, because nobody can stop me," she sai.
One
surgically sharp cutback helped her escape a slew of
Green Devil defenders in the middle of the field.
The 5--foot-2 speedster tiptoed down the home
sideline and outran the downfield pursuit. It would
have been her second play of more than 60 yards and
her second touchdown had her 65-yard touchdown run
not been called back for a pre-snap formation
violation.
Ashli
Monroe added a 20-yard touchdown run as time
expired.

Freshman Leads Freedom To District Flag Football
Crown
The
teams were tied 6-6 at halftime, and the score
stayed that way until Peek's run. The Patriots had
moved downfield from their own 20 following a Leto
punt. The winning drive was aided by three penalties
against the Falcons.
Peek
is usually the junior varsity quarterback but
stepped in as the starter Tuesday. She reeled off
several short runs and threw accurately. Her
favorite receivers were Rachel Burns and Kelley
Maronic. One of Maronic's catches was for 20 yards.
Freedom's offense controlled the ball during much of
the game. The Patriots had nine first downs and only
punted once, but Leto held twice on downs and
halftime stopped another drive.
Freedom struck quickly, taking over in the first
quarter following a Leto punt. Burns grabbed a short
Peek pass to give the Patriots a 6-0 first-quarter
lead. But Leto tied it in the second quarter when
quarterback Breanna Moore connected with Maryssa
Clark for a short touchdown.
Both
teams arrived at Tuesday's title game with 9-1
records. They had clashed during the season, with
Freedom having an easier time than they did Tuesday,
winning 33-0.
The
teams earned their way to the championship game with
victories Monday night. Leto defeated host Gaither,
13-7, while Freedom shut out Wharton, 18-0.
High
school flag football is growing in popularity in
Florida. The state is divided into 16 districts for
championship competition, with four of them in
Hillsborough County. There are no "classes" such as
1A, 2A, etc. as in other sports, with all schools
playing for one state championship. This is the
second year the sport has been played in
Hillsborough County.

Flag Football: West
Boca edges Boynton in overtime to capture district
title
Special to The Palm
Beach Post
Wednesday, April 25, 2007
BOCA RATON — It took
10 years for West Boca Raton coach Pete Gambino to
experience the joy of winning his first flag
football district championship, so it was only
fitting that it took overtime Tuesday night for the
Bulls to deliver.
Dorothy Dorviller
hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Rachel
Espendez to lift West Boca to
a 12-6 win over Boynton Beach in the District
15 title game at Spanish River High.
It was Dorviller's
second long reception of the game and her biggest of
the season for the Bulls (11-1), who will host a
regional playoff game next Tuesday night. She caught
a 31-yard pass in the first half.
"I knew it was mine;
no matter what I was catching it,'' said Dorviller
moments before Gambino was doused with Gatorade.
"I've been working at it, keeping my head up, and it
feels unreal to win the championship."
Boynton Beach (10-4)
took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on a 7-yard
sweep on fourth down by Laquandra Brazill, who led
the Tigers with 50 yards on 10 carries, and carried
that lead into the fourth quarter.
But a tough 3-yard
run by Espendez on a fourth-down keeper early in the
fourth tied the game. Espendez was flagged for a
personal foul after scoring, pushing the ball back
on the extra-point attempt. Her pass was knocked
down, keeping it 6-6.
It looked like
Boynton Beach might pull out the win in regulation
after driving deep into Bulls territory, but time
ran out, setting up the overtime.
Junior Melissa
Matthews kept Boynton out of the end zone on fourth
down with an excellent defensive play, knocking down
a sure touchdown pass at the goal line.
Espendez, a
sophomore, led West Boca with 47 rushing yards on 13
carries and was 7-for-12 passing for 94 yards, a
touchdown and an interception.
Palm
Beach Gardens 32, Suncoast 6: Alexis Carswell
threw three touchdown passes and Jasmine Whitehurst
had a touchdown catch and a 52-yard interception
return for a touchdown to lead the Gators (11-1)
past the Chargers in the District 12 playoffs in
West Palm Beach.
Carrie Harris added a
64-yard punt return for a touchdown for Gardens,
which will face Dwyer in today's championship game.
Dwyer
19, Jupiter 18 (OT): Jeanine Alasmar caught
the game-winning extra point in overtime and Megan
Edgley was 10-for-13 passing with three touchdowns
as the Panthers (6-4) edged the Warriors in the
District 12 playoffs.
Edgley added an
interception and six tackles on defense.
Lake
Worth 19, Forest Hill 0: Lori Padilla rushed
for 40 yards and a touchdown and Alex Cunningham and
Lily Powers each had a TD reception as the Trojans
(10-3) routed the Falcons in the District 14
semifinals in Wellington.
Top-seeded Lake Worth
will face No. 2 seed John I. Leonard in today's
championship.
John I.
Leonard 24, Palm Beach Central 0: Senior
quarterback Sarah Andrews was 15-for-21 passing for
172 yards with three TDs, and also rushed for a
touchdown, to help the Lancers (9-3) shut out the
Broncos (7-7) in the District 14 semifinals at Palm
Beach Central.

Monday and 7 p.m. Wednesday
Seeded teams: 1.
Seminole Ridge 2. Royal Palm Beach 3. Wellington
4. Glades Central
Outlook:
Seminole Ridge went
undefeated this regular season, and the only
teams to seriously challenge the Hawks were
non-district opponents. Royal Palm and
Wellington will play a tight game in their
semifinal, but neither has much of a chance
against Seminole Ridge.
District 14

Times: 6 p.m.
Tuesday and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
Seeded teams: 1.
Lake Worth 2. John I. Leonard 3. Palm Beach

Outlook:
Lake Worth is once again
the favorite, though John I. Leonard and Palm
Beach Central have closed the gap. Lake Worth
pulled out close wins over both teams this
season, and whoever wins between Central and
Leonard has a decent shot at upsetting the
Trojans in the final.

Easy transition from the court to the

TAMPA - When Riverview lines up Monday for
its district flag football semifinal against
Newsome, the Sharks will do so with virtually
the same lineup that defeated Newsome 75-31 in
girls basketball.
Six of Riverview's seven flag football
starters played basketball on the squad that
finished 17-7 and was one of the best county
teams throughout the regular season.
Times' honorable mention all-county
selections Belle Benitez and Marissa Trugillo
are two of the flag football team's best
receivers and Ashley Milian, a first-team
all-county performer in basketball the past two
seasons, provides size and speed at wideout.
Football starters Michelle Trugillo, Casey
Driscoll and Crystal Blake played supporting
roles during basketball season, while Mary
Davis, the lone nonvarsity basketball player,
was the starting point guard on the JV team.
Heck, even the coaches are the same. Jo
Jennings, an assistant on Lelani Gordon's
varsity basketball team and the JV basketball
coach, is the flag football coach. Gordon is an
assistant.
"They understand Lelani's expectations and my
expectations," Jennings said. "We didn't have to
come out and establish new rules with them."
The familiarity between the players and staff
has played a large role in Riverview's
unblemished 9-0 regular-season record. The team
has outscored opponents 307-54 and has notched
five shutouts in its nine victories.
"They understand spacing and things like that
from defense or playing a full-court press,"
Jennings said. "That's very similar to
basketball. Catching the ball is different just
because the shape is different. That's a big
improvement from last year to this year is that
we can catch it."
Another big reason for Riverview's success is
quarterback Michelle Trugillo, one of the
county's top players with 35 touchdowns who also
leads the team in flag pulls (tackles) on
defense.
"The quarterbacks that we play aren't nearly
as good as Michelle," Benitez said. "She's just
so athletic. She looks like a guy when she plays
out there. She thinks on her toes really well.
She's really smart with the ball."
