Flag Football in Scotland

Inverclyde, ScotlandYOUNG people are getting the chance to try American Football thanks to a new after-school initiative. Inverclyde Phoenix American Football Club is launching PASS (Phoenix After School Sport), a club offering Flag Football – the fast-paced non-contact version of the sport with sessions led by qualified coaches. The club started at St Columba’s, Greenock this week and will be introduced to other Inverclyde schools. Flag Football is considered an ideal sport for both sexes and for young people of all shapes and sizes. If the scheme is successful, there will be inter-school competitions and those players who want to take the sport further can join the Phoenix Junior and Youth Kitted Teams for 14 to 18-year-olds. The club is being run in conjunction with Inverclyde Active Schools and with the aid of Fraoch Ltd (Manpower Services). Phoenix head coach Vince Gillen said: “This was our first session in Inverclyde – having been to Park Mains and St Benedict’s in Renfrewshire. The first club at St Columba’s went really well and we hope to build on this over the coming weeks. We were helped by some of the Phoenix players and we couldn’t have launched this initiative without the help of Active Schools and our team sponsor Fraoch Ltd.
