Tallahassee,FL-High School Flag Football Honor Roll
Leon's Sharonta Williams was named All-Big Bend Flag Football Player of the Year and Leon's Matt Williams was named Coach of the Year.
Two years ago when Sharonta Williams joined Leon's flag football team, no one knew how vital she would be to the team's success — that includes Williams herself.
"I'm better than I thought I was," Williams said. "It's not just basketball that I'm good at."
After being named MVP at Leon High School, Williams has been voted the Tallahassee Democrat's 2009 Big Bend Flag Football Player of the Year.
"Having a player like Sharonta made my job easier," Leon head coach Matt Williams said. "She was a complete player on both sides of the ball."
On the offensive end, Williams rushed for 101 yards, had 69 catches for 1039 yards and averaged 12.5 yards per punt return.
Defensively, Williams led with eight interceptions, 102 tackles and five tackles for loss. "She was our most solid defensive player," Matt Williams added. Williams has also obtained success on the basketball court. The Leon graduate was awarded a basketball scholarship to Brewton Parker College.
Williams attributed a large amount of her achievement in flag football to the intense training required during basketball season. She also acknowledged fellow teammate Chelsea Parmer, along with friends Chad Parmer and Kiki Bryant for teaching her the rules of the game and being supportive along the way. Since the inception of the team in 2003, Leon's flag football program has made three appearances in the state championship game and acquired two titles in the process. Now that his first year as head coach is completed, Matt Williams hopes to enhance the program by developing a booster club and recruiting more competitive athletes. "The winning tradition has been established and now we want to maintain," said Matt Williams. Sharonta Williams hopes that younger girls who look up to her will follow in her footsteps and break barriers in all aspects of life. "It feels good to lead by example," Williams said. "I hope other girls will follow their dreams and not give up."
