The BMFFL is
gradually reaching its climax, a interlude when all the weak are
withered away and all the strong stay on to compete for the
glory. This past weekend again illustrated that you cannot be on
top forever, although Legion of Doom and Alliance in 8man and
Mr. Steer in 4man would surely have something to say about that,
as they are still unbeaten as we head to the play-offs. In the
Manchester sector there were some amazing games such as the
Castros vs. the upcoming Wildcats, Mr. Steer vs. The Suspects
and most surprisingly were the Outbackers that played 4man with
only three guys to win one of their games 47 -13, once again
will not mention who that happened to, but they will have to
work on their defense. Everyone knows how fired up players can
be in the playoffs and to a certain extent should be allowed to
show emotion, however it is essential that they show emotion
only and not aggress the referees or opposition. The penalty
will be strictly implemented without hesitation and those who
decide to be indiscipline will suffer the consequences. Anyway
let’s get back to the league, the Alliance without Jimmy Wilson
and Arty Hazard still played extremely well beating newcomers
Muddas (the team that beat them in the Mud Bowl). There has to
be a mention for the young linebacker no.7 Dan Summerlin
filling in for Jimmy Wilson, one TD, three sacks and an
interception – voted man of the match by his teammates, Jimmy
Wilson better watch your back. The Legion of Doom are still
unbeaten and looking good for the playoffs sending a warning out
to the rest. The Untouchables and Generals got back on track
from their loss last week with a comfortable win over the
Hitsquad and Shamrocks respectively. Mill City lost their 100%
record and so did the Outlaws that lost to the Outcast by one,
why didn’t they just kick a an extra point to tie and go into
OT. Most of the teams will be participating in the states
tournament on the 1st/2nd of Nov with a
huge response coming through in the last two weeks. All the
same, the league will not tolerate any misbehavior from any
players in the playoffs as most of the teams will be clearly
banned from participating in any upcoming tournaments.

The playoffs are
creeping up faster than the players of the BMFFL would have
expected and this week in Manchester the strong teams dominated
the play by crushing anyone in their sights. In the 4man category
we witnessed six shut out games as some teams took a pasting,
would not like to mention their names as it will not be necessary
to demoralize the teams. Teams such as the Castros, Mr. Steer, The
Suspects, Muddawgs and the Wildcats won all their games while the
Hammerheads, Outbackers, Gmen and Underdawgs all had a pretty bad
Sunday. From an outsiders perspective the games were quite
entertaining and illustrated that the big names are getting
stronger as the playoffs approach. The lower order teams such as
the Nasty Boys, Rams and Razorbacks seem to be improving and you
never know may surprise one or two group leaders. The league also
saw many forfeits this weekend which of course would not really be
tolerated and the necessary measures will be undertaken to ensure
such activities will not carry on. The Excite will know not to go
out drinking too heavy before their games as they nearly got beat
by the Underdawgs, if not for the Excite’s long pass game that
would have been one hell of a story.
The playoff
picture for the 4man in Boston is also looking good; it is
difficult to actually write much on this sector mainly because we
don’t have anyone willing to report the activities that happen
there. However, the CWD and Hogwild are still in the position they
deserve to be in and the B div 2nd half team have taken
pole position at the expense of 5 angry men losing to happy hour
that are all chasing the bunch.
The 8man picture
took a twist although not really that visible but the Generals
lost their first game, this does not necessarily mean much as they
have always played very well in the playoffs. The Outlaws,
Alliance, Mill City Militia and the Legion of Doom (LOD) are the
only 8man teams with 100% records. That once again can be viewed
as just a statistic or as someone making a point to the rest of
the league – that come playoff time they are not looking to lay
low. Murphy’s Law, Bryans Place and the Untouchables have also
been impressive over the past few weeks; the Untouchables did
quite well, playing a close encounter with the Alliance that has
so far beaten all in sight. The most important advice that can be
given at a time like this for all the lower positioned teams to
keep working hard as the results are showing improvement and very
close games. The top teams cannot afford to slip up now that they
have achieved so much; if they do the lower teams will be quite
willing to take advantage.

Week 5 of the
Boston Metro Flag Football League witnessed most of the top 8man
teams maintain top positions in their different sectors. Teams
such as the Outlaws, Generals, and Alliance have all maintained
their 100% record in the top divisions while Mill
City and
Legion of Doom (LOD) are the high rollers in the lower divisions.
The Generals upset the unbeaten Outcasts and Alliance the team on
top form seem to be on a regular routine by beating the Assassins
in the 8man North top of the table clash. Other crucial games were
the Swanies Crew versus Alumni now known as Bryan’s place that
took top spot beating their top of the table rivals, Untouchables
maintain their position as the top dawg, whereas in the central C
division Murphy’s Law have an eye on being top seed for the
play-offs, and all the other teams are still fighting as there
were quite a few close encounters last weekend. In other words the
8man category has not really changed from the previous week apart
from a few but practical alterations. Once again grants me the
opportunity to let the players ask themselves who is the top 8man
team in our league (at the moment it seems to be the Outlaws) but
only till they play the young Alliance and Al Menino die hard
Generals. However, if any of these teams would like a one on one
showdown to justify why they should be called the BMFFL number
one, the tournaments are coming up soon so check the website for
more information.
Teams of the week
-
Outlaws –
unbeaten and conceded only seven points in five games
-
Alliance –
although only played 4 have won 4 (also unbeaten in 4man)
-
Legion of Doom –
unbeaten, conceding only one score so far
-
Mill City M –
unbeaten, dominating their division
In the 4man CWD
seem to be enjoying delivering misery to any team they come across
on a weekly basis. CWD are 10 – 1 ,and are sending a message to
rest of the league not verbally but their game is doing all the
talking for them. The only other team in the
Boston
section that is really making an effort to show some sort of
challenge are the 5 angry men with their 8-1 record. In Manchester
Mr. Steer go top, Muddawgs and Tackling Dummies slip up slightly
whilst Castros are still playing the veterans game. New boys
Outbackers continue to impress and illustrated that this weekend
playing three hard games and guess what won all three. The play of
the day has was nominated by the exciting cheer from a great 1foot
catch made by Ricky(Castros) against GMen, before leaving to enjoy the
Red Sox game with a few tinnies. Excite are still playing well and
top the B division but have got the Wildcats (nice guys) and
Suspects breathing down their backs, can Glen keep his cool and
lead his team on a good run this season, we will have to wait and
see.
Player of the week

entertainment and skill.

As playoff time approaches rapidly, there are many teams within
the BMFFL whose futures have yet to be determined. With two weeks
left to go, crunch time is here and it is time to either rise to
the occasion or fall back down to the cellar. Even teams who have
wrapped up first place need to continue to perform at a high level
or they will face a tougher opponent in the playoffs. Seeding can
be the difference between playing a poor team, a quality team, or
even a doubleheader. As the weather turns colder and the
competition grows stiffer, each player must find the heart, the
skill, and the desire to perform above and beyond for his
teammates. Now is the time to see who those players and teams
are.
The battle for supremacy
continues in the 8Man (A/B) South Division with Outlaws and the
Generals each with 5-0 records. Last week the Generals squeaked
out a victory over Outkast(4-1), 19-18, to maintain their share of
the division lead. Outlaws shut out their opponent, the last place
DawgPound, 19-0, to stay even with the Generals. In a match-up
that promises to be one if the best of the year, the Generals will
face their rivals, Outlaws, for the Division Title. If you’ve got
a game in Brockton this Sunday, this 8:00am game is one worth
getting up early to watch.
FlagMag Oddsmakers are
giving a slight edge to Outlaws(+1).
In the 8Man (A/B) North
Division, 3 teams are battling it out for the division title, the
Rebels, Assassins, and Alliance. In another classic match-up on
the dock this Sunday, 4-0 Alliance is pitted against the best of
the Central, Untouchables (4-1). The Rebels play the 2-3 Panthers,
and the Assassins face the struggling 0-5 Warriors. This division
will certainly come down to the final week, with all eyes watching
who will come out alone and on top.
In the 8Man (A/B) Central
Division, Untouchables maintain their slim hold on first place,
while the Shamrocks hope that a win for them and an Untouchable
loss will propel them into a share of first. The Shamrocks (3-2)
face the pesky Muddas (3-2) in Lowell @ 10:30. The 3-2 Bowl Hogs
also hope a victory over the dangerous MadPack will put them in
good position in week 7 to make a run at the division title.
In the 8Man C Division
South, Bryan’s Place and Swanies Crew share a tight lead over the
Road Dogs and Washington Tap. Swanies Crew will face a dangerous
Road Dog team this weekend in a battle that could open things up
or make things even tighter. Bryan’s Place will face a tough
Dynasty team coming off a nice victory over Secret City last
weekend. Washington Tap, coming off a huge victory over Damiens
will face a struggling Secret City team @ 10:30.
In the 8Man C Division
North, Mill City Militia 5-0 holds a commanding 2 game lead over
the competition in what is clearly a division of teams fighting
for 2nd place. Mill City will face a tough test this
weekend against Xplosion(3-2). Xplosion is fighting to keep their
slim hopes of winning the division alive. A victory this weekend
over Mill City would go a long way in helping their cause.
In the 8Man C Division
Central, it is a two-team race between 5-0 Legion of Doom and 4-1
Murphy’s Law. Legion of Doom has surprised everyone this year with
their solid play. Murphy’s Law has also been excellent and take
their 4-1 record into week 6 against AMSTD(1-4). Legion of Doom
will try to keep pace and ahead of the pack against Sweep the Leg
Johnny 1-4(a new name might be in order for these fellas).
The final 2 weeks promises
to be compelling and competitive, as the intensity level reaches a
fever pitch in preparation for the playoffs. Everything is on the
line, who will hang on and who will fall off? The next two weeks
will reveal who the true frontrunners are and who the pretenders
are. Stay tuned……………………..
Play hard, play smart, play tough!
Sept 20th,2003
The BMFFL has developed immensely since last year noticing
improvement in the standard of play from within many teams. The
Tackling Dummies, Wildcats, Muddawgs have all stepped up and
compete fiercely against the likes of Mr Steer and Castros, whilst
the Hammerheads, Excite, Suspects and Wolves have also shown good
development. Last week in Manchester we witnessed some big games
such as Mr Steer vs. Castros; Wildcats vs. Suspects and Excite vs.
Wildcats of which two games went into OT emphasizing on the
competitiveness the teams are willing to show mid-way through the
season. On the other hand, it is important to mention that some
teams such as the Razorbacks, G-men and the Nasty Boys are not the
teams they were last year, what has happened to you guys who
showed extreme trick plays and athletism. Although, it all counts
during the playoffs when I actually think they will step up and
demonstrate their experience in the game of flag football. The
introduction of new team Outbacker will be a shock to a few as
they possess a reasonable amount of talent and have shown that
they are capable of matching the top teams. CWD and 5 angry men
are both 7-1 in Boston winning at will but have to keep it up till
the end of the season and have something to show for it as there
is immense competition ready for them in Manchester. Its all
warming up or should we say freezing down as the weeks go by and
the teams are all gradually developing a preparing themselves for
playoff time. I hope it continues as it is very entertaining and a
good learning process for me as Team England are currently working
on their national program and need experience which is gained by
being involved in a good league.
Now the question I
would like to pose is who is dominating the 8man game, the
Outlaws, Outcast, Generals, are all looking really good in the
South although the Generals are not playing as convincingly as
last year…maybe some of the teams are catching up with Al Menino’s
crew. In the North, the Assassins, Rebels and Alliance are
dominating with the most impressive from my viewpoint being the
Rebels that are playing some nice A football only to have a minor
slowdown by the
Alliance
last weekend. The C divisions are keeping it real with Mill
Militia, Swanies Crew, Untouchables and the Legion of Doom (nice
name) all at pole at the moment, however could all change as just
round the corner the second placed teams a hot pursuing them. So
far the league is looking very good and with near enough no
reports of trash talking, or insubordinate behavior from anyone
emphasizes on how guys just want to play football and enjoy it
also. Watch this space for more news…

The Boston Metro Flag
Football League kicked off its Fall Season on September 7th
with over 40 teams competing within the 8-man A/B and C Divisions.
This is the 8th season for the BMFFL and it is expected
to be one of the best yet. Teams represent towns and cities from
New Hampshire to Massachusetts to Rhode Island. Games are played
in Brockton, Boston, Revere, Lowell, and Manchester, NH.
The 8-man A/B division is
once again stacked with top quality athletes and well rounded
teams. Alliance 1-0(Londonderry), Outkast2-0(New Bedford),
Generals2-0(Providence), and Outlaws2-0(Providence) are some of
the early favorites along with Untouchables2-0(Revere).
In the 8-man C Division,
Washington Tap1-1(Quincy), Mill City Militia2-0 (Lowell),
Riderz1-1 (Lowell), are this year’s favorites to compete for the
title. Also keep your eye on B. Alumni 2-0 (Marshfield) as they
have started the season off red hot and hope to keep it going this
week against Secret City.
Games of the Week
Washington Tap
(Quincy) vs. Road Dogs (Braintree) 8:00 @ Brockton
Can the up and coming Road
Dogs finish off the Tap or will the Tap continue to pour it on?
Untouchables (Revere)
vs. Rebels (Lawrence) 10:30 @ Revere
This is one of the best
match-ups of the year. Can the Untouchables defense continue their
dominance or will the Rebels touch the end zone enough to hand the
Untouchables their first loss?
Shamrocks (Reading)
vs. Assassins (Lawrence) 8:00 @ Lowell
The Shamrocks have the
offense and maybe the luck of the Irish, but I wouldn’t want to
mess with the Assassins.

Nov 16th-3rd round Playoffs
This past weekend the BMFFL final playoff
games took place in both NH and MA with all the top teams in both
the 8man and 4man division playing for the a spot in the finals
and in some cases semi-finals. In Manchester, NH the 4man division
was what was anticipated, the Castros playing the league unbeaten
Mr. Steer for the NH title, although there was the expectancy of
the Muddawgs or Outbackers causing a bit of an upset. In the long
run the Castros played like veterans of the game and tried
extremely hard to defend their position as top dog in NH. Mr.
Steer the new blood have now emerged as top dog, 34 games unbeaten
and have been playing extremely well this season led by Team USA
captain Jim Wilson. The Muddawgs, Outbackers and Nasty Boys all
put on a pretty good show but in the end were not focused enough
to beat either the Castros or Mr. Steer but we all know they will
come back next year firing on all cylinders. In the 4man B
division Excite had to lose twice against a strong and well
improved Suspects team, Glen and his crew lost the first game but
came back strong to win the second and book a spot in the finals.
Finally, the NH C game between the Rams and Guffy had to go the
full two games with a mature Guffy side narrowly beating the
newcomers Rams to become the NH C division winners. In summary Mr.
Steer have looked strong all season, the Muddawgs have become a
exceptionally good A team , the Suspects, Wildcats and of course
Excite should all be playing A div football next year; the Rams
did well for a first time and will definitely be a team to watch
next year.
In Brockton, MA two of the strongest contenders for the 8man title
Outcast and Outlaws slugged it out in what was reported to be the
game of the season so far. This rivalry has always been the one to
set of the fireworks as these two teams are packed with power,
skill, speed, technique and finesse. In a remarkable game of power
and consistent flair both teams matched each other for most part
of the game. Remember the Outcast have already beaten the Outlaws
once this season, the Outlaws were out to revenge that defeat, the
Outcast has other plans and in an action packed first half led
by13-7. Charlie Holiday during the interval rallied his teammates
and they came out firing all guns to tie the game. The Outcast
once again matched them for skill, speed and power. Then QB
Holiday threw a nice long pass to one of his receivers to tie the
game. Overtime, the game went into overtime and the Outlaws beat
the Outcast and will meet the Alliance in the BMFFL championship.
At Moaxley Park, MA it was the same kind of story top team the
Generals that departed with key players that joined the up with
Alliance leaving Al Menino with a young, new side that has taken
this season to jell and play as a team. The Alliance versus The
Generals has got cracker written all over it, especially with old
boys Spaz, Norm, the Goodhart bothers all crossing over. Anyway
reports from observers claimed an exciting game with two teams
that are quite technical, have speed, skill and talent in
abundance. The Generals matched the Alliance in all departments
with the Generals leading 7-6 for a huge part of the game. It
looked like the Generals had the Alliance in a corner and bam out
of nowhere Arty Hazzard delivers a beauty to Gabe Boatwright for a
TD in the last seconds of the game. The pass becomes the winning
pass for Alliance booking them a place in the finals against the
team on a high – Outlaws, the only team to beat Alliance
twice this season. Alliance has not been beaten in league play
yet, in tournaments yes but not in league play. The final will be
good to see, it is important that both teams watch their sidelines
and discipline will be key, the rest of the attributes both teams
possess in skill, pace, technique & more, it will be another cracking game of flag football.
BMFFL Championship Preview
This weekend the Boston Metro
Fall League will come to an end after an exciting ten weeks of
great flag football. Most of the teams I can claim have definitely
improved, the new ones have gelled and the old ones solid
contenders. This weekend the champions of the 8Man A, B, C & D
will be decided with some big match-ups, whilst the 4Man will also
be decided on the same day with the best from New Hampshire
competing against their opposition from the MA area. This may
sound bias but the biggest game of the day has to be handed to the
8man A Division Finals not that the other games will not be action
packed, however we should admit this is the bigun. The Chiccone
Outlaws led by out-of-retirement QB Charlie Holiday lost one game
in regular season and are still buzzing off their close win over
the Outcast another exceptionally talented team. Alliance are
looking good, unbeaten in league play this season and are just
back from winning the 7man division at the Ft Lauderdale qualifier
last weekend. Although there is more to it, the Outlaws beat the
Alliance twice in one day by one point at the USFTL regional
tournament that took place three weeks ago, anyone would think
they have the upper hand. On the other hand, the Alliance are like
a tiger pulled by the tail and we all know what happens when u do
that. The game will be interesting as both have in their
possessions skill, speed, strength and good coordination they near
enough cancel each other out, who will out think the other, we
will have to wait & see. For the spectators I shall keep an good
eye on the Assassins vs. Shamrocks as one will be progressing to
play the big boys in "A' division and are the unbeaten Mr. Steer
going to win it all in the 4Man A Div or will the HogWild take the
crown. Glen's Excite have improved and look good for the
championship but surely Jailbait will have something to say in
that. Well that's all for now, the expectation for good and
competitive games are high, and I hope to write up on more
excitement next week.

BMFFL Championship Story
As predicted the
championship was special the games were exciting, full of action
some teams left winners and the rest losers but at least I can say
all the teams played well and gave it their best shot. There
wasn’t a lot between the finalist as teams lost by either a score
or just a mere point. The primary game between the Alliance, NH and
Chiccone Outlaws, Providence was all about two half’s. The
Alliance set the pace of the game in the 1st half
scoring three un-replied TD's clearly outsmarting their opponents,
in the 2nd half the cards were turned around and Tony
Sanders, Charlie Holiday and Anthony Coma started to get a nice
rhythm going and scored three TD’s after Alliance had scored their
fourth TD and were up by 27 – 21. The game was still close and
both teams were not well into the game, the Alliance could have
easily put the game away but started slipping and the Outlaws were
gaining more confidence with little time left in the game. The
Alliance needed to obtain a first down on a running clock to end
the game which they did, both teams congratulated each other and
the undefeated Alliance win their first BMFFL title, the Outlaws I
think are a good family unit and thanks to Mr. Chiccone have
developed into a good side. Yes the Alliance are the 2003 BMFFL
champions, congratulations good offensive line work to contain a
huge defensive threat, Spaz and Matt Kling scored great TD’s but
Spaz scored the best, with a long deep post diving catch for the
first TD of the game. The first half was all about Alliance with
the OL completely dominating the interior giving the receivers the
opportunity to run their routes and the QB Arty Hazzard to deliver
some exceptional ranged passes. Overall the game was good and
played in an enthusiastic manner that was always expected.
Congratulations to
the Assassins, Washington Tap, and Damiens for winning the B, C
and D 8Man division titles, from the parts of the games I observed
you guys played extremely well and were all very disciplined. The
runners up teams, well what can I say you lost by very little which
indicates that the position you got to was deservedly achieved,
keep up the good work and maybe next year will be the champion.
In the 4man A Div Mr Steer remain the
only unbeaten team in the league defeating the Hogwild The
Excite team won the B division
in the best out of three with receiver Mike playing
really well. Finally Guffy that worked extremely well to improve
as one of the new teams were beaten by Knappy Trenches whom
sustained an injury in the championship but as a handicap managed
to rally some good plays together and sustain pressure from their
opposition. Thanks for playing in the BMFFL 2003 season and we all
hope to see you guys playing again soon. Watch out for upcoming
tournaments and good luck to everybody.
