Pensacola,FL-Emerald Coast Flag Football Championships

The inaugural ECFF Championships hosted by the University of West Florida involved some of the top 7-man screen teams in the country and had lots of excitement.

Fifteen teams competed in the competitive division and four teams competed in the recreational division.

The competitive divisions were headlined by the combination of the Hitmen from New Orleans, LA and the Legends from Atlanta, GA. On Saturday afternoon, Hall of Famer Tony Manzella showed up to lead the Hitmen/Legends at QB.

After pool play, the top four teams of the Hitmen/Legends, Untouchables, Mt. Carmel, and Going for One all drew for playoff positon. The Untouchables stepped out on a limb and chose a match-up with the Hitmen/Legends in the quarterfinals. The game had all the hype and lived up to its billing when the Untouchables leading by one point, scored with 1:11 on the clock to go up by seven points. The Hitmen/Untouchables drove down the field with no time-outs left and with eleven seconds scored to come within one. A decision was made to go for the win and the two point conversion and the Hitmen/Legends threw a double pass which resulted in the successful conversion. The Hitmen/Legends won the semifinal over Mt. Carmel from Hattiesburg, MS to clinch a spot in the finals.

On the other side of the bracket, Hollyhood from New Orleans took out rival, Going for One, who they had lost to in pool play 26-13. Their semifinal match-up versus Live Bait of Pensacola, FL was controlled by Hollyhood and they took a 20-12 victory to set-up the match-up with the Hitmen / Legends in the finals.

In the competitive championship game, Hollyhood struck first and held on for a 7-0 halftime lead. The second half saw the Hitmen/Legends rally back, but Hollyhood held on and scored twice more in the 2nd half for a 20-13 final score and the $700 cash prize.

West Palm beach,FL-High School Playoffs
Gators - Palm Beach Garden

It seems as if the girls from Palm Beach Gardens Gator flag football team are starting to really believe in the actual development of flag football. Flag football in Florida High schools has now become a recognized sport amongst the 14 – 18 yrs old female group. This sport has grown not only because the organizer have been innovative in the creation of a great sport for girls in the state or because they have great and enthusiastic coaches but mainly the girl’s attitude to the sport has been first class. They are playing with passion and the high expectancy level amongst these peers is pretty fascinating.

“Scoring touchdowns is fun, but its even more fun when you score them on defense” Trudy Salmon (senior)

The Gator team is a typical example of the female sex that likes to do things right and make it looks professional. They conceded a mere 6 points which was all in one game against Dwyer High. The Gators are already in contention for 2004 state championship an event in year two thanks to Florida High School Athletic Association.

“I play soccer and I’m a cheerleader, but this is definitely my favorite” Krystal Johnston (junior)

According to Coach O’Connor at Palm Beach Gardens that had 84 girls tryout for the team of which a preseason conditioning session is part of the program. Most of the weak ones were eliminated and the best were selected to represent the High school flag football team. This team has players that would like to see a future in flag football, there is already talk of scholarship to College. One thing that is so important though is the coaching; more coach O’Connor’s need to be involved with the sport. Maybe someday the government will start allocating grants to school across the USA that would have the desire to assist in the growth of this sport.

William T. Dwyer High - Panthers

Girl’s high school flag football went statewide last year and so did the William T. Dwyer High Panthers. The Dwyer girls won the District 9 title and advanced to the state semifinals before losing 28-12 to Fort Lauderdale in Clearwater. Fort Lauderdale went on to win the first official state flag football championship with a 14-7 win over Lake Worth.

Dwyer finished the season at 12-3 and head coach Joe Marx is expecting another big effort this year -- despite what happened at an April 1 practice. Marx, who starts his third year as the Panthers' coach, saw a crowd gathered around second-year junior starting quarterback Gia Castellino after a drill.

"I think I broke a finger," a somber Castellino told Marx.

"My heart just sank to my knees," Marx recalled.

Fortunately for the team, Marx hadn't remembered it was April Fools Day and he had been had. The Panthers are on track to having another good season. They started Monday night with a 27-0 win over Boca Raton and Castellino threw a 43-yard touchdown in the rout. "We're really solid on both sides of the ball," Marx said. "We feel good about our chances. Obviously we have to stay healthy but we feel good about out backups.

"If Gia would happen to go down, Amanda Conforti could step in and I don't think we would lose anything there. We have good people backing up at all the positions." The Panthers have 25 girls in the ranks this spring, 15 are full-time varsity 10 are on the JV but since the teams won't play double headers this season, Marx hopes to dress out 20 for the varsity games.

"A lot of the other coaches were happy to do it that way because they want to do the same thing we are going to do," Marx said. "That way they will get more playing time for more people." The Panthers have an experience core back on the varsity. "We only really lost two on offense and two on defense so we don't have many to replace," Marx said.

Back are senior wide receiver Conforti and senior rusher Marcy Haylett. Besides Castellino, juniors center Tracy Swartzbaugh, inside receiver Amelia Reymann, Claudia Palermo and Tara Mock, who was injured most of last year, also return. Returning sophomore Kelly Oftedal will play wide receiver, safety and linebacker. New to the varsity are sophomore Kelly Smith, who will step up to start on offense, junior slot receiver Kayla Holst and junior wide receiver Liz Mguyen. Holst transferred from Melbourne and Mguyen is an exchange student from Austria. Neither had played flag football before. "Mguyen has real good hands," Marx said. "She played European hand ball."

The Panthers' offense is still very strong. Conforti, the backup quarterback, is always a threat on the double pass and Reymann returns after scoring 17 touchdowns last year. The Panthers will upgrade their offense this year and use a double pass more, Marx said. Seeing teams from other parts of the state in the playoffs gave the Dwyer coaches a better perspective on the game.

"A lot of those other teams are running the ball," he said. "Fort Lauderdale has been playing the game as long as we have and they had a great athlete at quarterback. They run from that position and make your defense come up."

Most players have a dual role. Palermo, Mock, Smith, Conforti and Schwarzbaugh are linebackers and Castellino and Reymann are the safeties.

The Panthers are the defending champions in District 9 which includes Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Beach Lakes, Inlet Grove, Suncoast and Okeechobee -- the only school between Palm Beach County and the Orlando area playing flag football.

"I think it's still going to be us, Gardens and Lakes," Marx said. "It's going to be a dog fight. Gardens have their quarterback returning and she's a great player. Lakes have their great basketball team that just puts on flag football uniforms and they come and get you. "It's going to be all about that district tournament. We're just going to have to be fortunate to win it again," he said.

The top four teams advance to the district playoffs, the winner moves on to the regionals. Marx is again assisted by Sam Hollingsworth and Pat Callan. This marks the seventh year Palm Beach County schools have played flag football. Dwyer is 60-10 overall. This year there are 95 flag football teams in the state playoff system, up three from last year, but there are an additional 19 schools playing independent schedules.

The state championship will be played at Spanish River High School on May 28-29.

Jupiter tryouts draw 80 prospects

With no college scholarships offered, girls high school flag football is a just-for-fun sport and at Jupiter High, it's apparently a lot of fun. Tryouts drew 80 girls, which is about how many boys turn out for fall football tryouts every year. Warriors coach Mike DeLeonardo and assistant Cathy Scalese trimmed the field down to a more manageable 60 split between the varsity and JV. Last year they kept 58. DeLeonardo, who is also the head freshman boy’s football coach in the fall, will dress out 16 on the varsity. The rest will play on the JV.

Jupiter has 12 returning varsity players from last year's 6-4 team. Despite the winning record, Jupiter didn't qualify for one of the four berths in the district tournament. "We had a better record than Inlet Grove but they beat us head to head and they made the playoffs," DeLeonardo said. "That was our first winning season in four years."

Returning for Jupiter are: seniors Falon Turner (running back), Stephanie McCarthy (receiver), Leslie Russell (receiver), Nicole Beane (receiver) and Morgan Fradley (backup quarterback); juniors Katrina Cragg (starting quarterback), Liza Murauyeva (running back), Danielle Dioguardi (receiver), Nicole McGuire (receiver) and Meredith Booth (receiver); and sophomore receivers Bari Levy and Angelica Blum.

New to the squad are junior linebacker Kristyn Wattles (who played two years ago), junior center Amanda Nugent (up from JV) and freshman running backs Katlin and Meghan Mulberry. Most of the girls play other sports -- weightlifting, basketball, swimming, soccer -- and several are cheerleaders, Scalese noted. "They're all pretty good," she said. The JV will carry more than 40 girls. "It's not that we have so many girls on the JV, it's that we have so many good girls on JV," DeLeonardo said. "We could make two good teams on JV."

Some key JV players include senior linebacker Brittany Bellamy, sophomore receiver Krista Downey, freshman quarterback Tracey Mannes and freshman running back Samantha Scariti. Like Dwyer, Jupiter will be dressing out some JV players for varsity games.

"I would think we'll at least be 6-4 or 7-3 this year," DeLeonardo said. "Our only challenges will be we have to play three of the four best teams in the county --Gardens, Lakes and Dwyer -- in our district.”We consider ourselves right in there with them," he said. "Last year, we played Dwyer close. We outplayed Lakes but they just scored every time they touched the ball."

Jupiter home games will be played at Jupiter Community Park

Barcelona,Spain

The American School of Barcelona closed out the season with a disappointing loss to Igualada in the final of the Catalan Flag Football Championships (SPAIN).  After having finished third on the regular season, the Bills came to the playoff tournament as the only team in the country to have ever defeated Igualada,  the current NFL Flag School Champions in Spain.
The tournament was set up in two groups where the teams played round robin against each other and the 1st of group 1 would meet the 1st of group 2 in the final game.  The American School first had to face the Vilafranca Eagles.  The difference in the size of the players was remarkable but the Bills were still able to win the game with a comfortable 46-33 to go on to the next game.
In  the second game the Bills had to face the Poblenou Bufals, one of the only teams they had lost to previously.  The game first started well and the Bills got a head start on the scoreboard getting to a comfortable 18-0 lead but after a couple of interceptions on bad passes the Bills were able to get to 18-20 right before the halftime.  with less than 20 seconds on the clock, Fabio Cichero (QB) threw a rocket to the endzone and Dani Silberstein caught  the TD that allowed them to go to halftime with somewhat of a lead.  On the second half the game was completely dominated by the Bills who went ahead 36-26 and with a minute left on the clock even had the opportunity to put all the subs in to get some playing time.  The final score was 36-34.
It was now time to face Igualada.  Igualada is the school in Spain that has been going to the European Flag Championship for the past 4 years and they finished 3rd in Europe and 5th in the World Cup in Japan last year.  The Bills were now stronger than they had ever been and they wanted it more than anyone out there. The final was pretty even all the way and Igualada was up 26-25 on halftime.  The second half was a different game.  The Bills players started to cramp really bad and it took its toll on  defense. Passes were not cought and many 1st downs not accomplished  in the later part of the game for the bills as that made the difference and allowed Igualada to run away with a 39-31 score on the end.

Dublin,Ireland-Ireland Challenge

England Prepares to Take on Team USA June 5th in Portsmouth,England

England defeats Ireland 13-6 in a friendly encounter.

2nd Senior Flag International Challenge Match
Saturday 8th May, Marlay Park, Rathfarnham, Ireland

England travelled to Dublin with an experienced 18 man squad drawn from 6
ESFL sides to take on Ireland in the 2nd Senior Flag International Challenge
match between the countries. In warm conditions The game was played under Irish rules which is 7Man all eligible with two halves of 45 minutes.England came out with an
all-out pass attack, but they hadn't counted on the superb secondary of the
Irish who shut them out on their opening four drives without completing a
pass. Ireland's offense moved the ball well throughout, but England DB's
stepped up to the plate and ended all their long drives with interceptions -
the most promising drive ending when Vincent Gurrea picked off Ireland QB
Kevin Mullen on England's 5 yard line after he had led them down field on
the back of good running by Steve Dunne and Liam Farrell.

Towards the end of the first half, Andre Clarke picked off Mullen to give
England the ball in great field position. Three plays later, QB Roy Tanton
found Nick Moffat over the middle from two yards out to put England ahead.
Nick Watson hit Gurkinder Mann in the corner of the endzone for the 1 PAT to
give England a 7-0 lead at the end of the first half.

Ireland came out with a time consuming drive at the beginning of the second
half that took almost 20 minutes off of the clock, which culminated in Steve
Dunne's 5 yard run up the middle on a draw play, but crucially the 2 PAT
fell short as Ireland looked to take the lead.

Tanton tried to hit straight back for England with a 40 yard pass down the
right hand touchline to his North Devon Dogs teammate Johnny Stevenson to
give England a 1st and goal from the Ireland 6, but they could not punch the
ball in with the closest being Matt Stevenson's catch in the endzone being
ruled that he did not have full control as he landed.

England did not have to wait long to put the clinching score on the board
when Abdul Lawal returned a Mullen's 5th inteception of the game 21 yards
for a score to make the score 13-6 with 9 minutes left. Ireland had one last
chance to score, and drove down to the England 20 yard line, but strong
tackling by Brown, Michael and Clarke, and breaks up by Tim Smith and Lawal
snuffed out these chances to give England revenge for the 27-7 loss they
suffered in 2000.

At the end of game ceremony, Ireland chose Vincent Gurrea as the England MVP
who had 3 interceptions in the game, and England chose Ireland DB Peter
Mullen for his outstanding play in the Irish secondary. Special thanks must
also go to Liam Farrell for organising the game, and the IAFL officials who
officiated a game played in good spirits throughout.

Scoring:

0-7 Moffat 2 yard pass from Tanton (Watson to Mann 1 PAT) 43.51

April 18th,2004
Providence, RI
Flagmag held the first USFTL NIT in Providence, Rhode Island with serious competition from the New England area taking part in an explosive 8man tournament. The tournament was embraced with talented teams Townies, Equity Solutions and Blue Eagle with BMFFL league leaders Outlaws, Alliance, Generals and Hitmen all fighting for the 8man top spot. Clearly a strong pack of teams with in depth skill, speed and strength was showcased at the tournament. The Outlaws started really well against long time rivals the Generals who were pipped in a 7-6 encounter. Alliance the other finalists Alliance beat Equity Solution 6-0 in another close group game. The Townies and Blue Eagle both not as sure of the style of play as they were the rules just couldn’t get it going and suffered big defeats against all the BMFFL teams. In the quarter finals Alliance got a bye due to best record and the draw while Outlaws comfortably beat the Townies and so did Equity Solutions beating Blue Eagle 26-0. The toughest game in the quarter finals was between old rivals Generals and the Hitmen led by two of the most recognized quarterbacks in Mass both from two different generations. Anthony Coma vs. Al Menino was surely one of the best games to watch as they both possess different qualities. Al Menino at his age is unbelievably athletic and can pass on the run, while AC can throw on his back foot just as good going forward. The game was a well mannered battle and with the Generals winning to meet another rival in Alliance.

The semi-finals we very exciting the Outlaws clearly looked the best team in the competition and got on top of Equity Solutions really early, Charlie Holiday connecting with Tony Sanders on a swing right, Tony did the rest running it all the way for a 35 yard TD. The final score 21-6 in favor of the Outlaws does not reflect on the game as Equity Solutions drove the ball down the field making good plays but just couldn’t score. The other semi-final saw Alliance meet the Generals in an tremendously close game, both teams defenses cancelled out their offenses and they could only score 7 a piece throughout the entire game. In overtime the Generals WR caught one in the end zone after a terrific diving attempt only to see the ball pop out on him making contact with the ground giving the Alliance the opportunity to win and they did. The finals as exciting as anyone would expect did deliver. Alliance worked they way down field and Matt Kling opened the scoring with a nice quick out but the Outlaws replied quicker than Alliance would think of with a Tony Sanders out & up to out sprint the Alliance fastest for a nice TD. From then onwards Alliance gradually took control with a superb punt return ran back by Jimmy Wilson, juking, faking and moving his hips all the way down field not to forget the good blocking by his teammates and also the missed flags by the Outlaws. The Outlaws started to pull a few strings but lost possession with only a few minutes left, the Alliance’s next possession was rewarded by a John Red TD – QB Norm Plamudon connecting neatly with Red on a fade with the CB falling over made it easier but that was near enough secured the title for the Alliance over their immediate rival. An exciting tournament was immense talent on display from all the teams

England-Birmingham-Easter Bowl

Leicester Eagles won the first English Senior Flag League 5man tournament of 2004 with 3 wins out of 3. North Devon Dogs and Staffordshire A also came out of the round robin tournament unbeaten to start the year well. With seven of the best ESFL sides competing, the games were played to a good standard which has given all the clubs excellent preparation for the season ahead and especially Team USA's visit in June where there will be 2 or 3 sides who will be fancying their chances of a scalp.

Hosted by the Birmingham Raiders at Billesley Common in south Birmingham the hometown Raiders opened the tournament against the North Devon Dogs. The Dogs offense showed the oppsoition what they were about this season with 3 scores without reply and an uncomprising defense which shutout the Raiders 20-0. At the sametime on the other pitch, the Bournemouth Deckchairs went behind early on against the favoured Staffordshire A, but John Parson's run and a safety stunned the university side to take the lead 8-6. Two TD's inside the final 2 minutes (one from Ally Reid) enabled Staffordshire to run away 20-8.

The heavens then opened, and the next set of games were played in horrendous conditions as spectators sought shelter leaving Birmingham to put in an excellent display against Leicester eventually going down 21-14 with John Pimperton sealing the win, and Chichester Sharks potent offense destroying Team Extreme 25-6. With the rain stopping for the day Roy Tanton got his North Devon Dogs going by leading them to a 32-0 destruction of the Deckchairs - the Stevenson brothers and Simon really doing the damage. Staffordshire A came out on top 20 zip against Extreme who called it a day after that.

In an eagerly awaited game, Leicester Eagles edged the Chichester Sharks 8-6, and then Birmingham defeated Bournemouth with ease 15-0 - Darren Kangurs scoring twice. North Devon and Staffordshire then preserved their unbeaten records with a 0-0 tie - the Dogs thereby not conceding a point on the day (the first time that has happened in BSFL/ESFL history at a 5man tournament). Late in the day, Bournemouth crumbled 20-2 to Leicester after again conceding late scores, and Birmingham were second best to Chichester 14-6 in an entertaining game at the end of the tournament.

The next ESFL 5man tournament is in Portsmouth on SATURDAY 5th June.
