CORNER BROOK-Canada-Touch Football league starts

CORNER BROOKCORNER BROOK-Canada
Touch football league ready to kick off

— The Corner Brook Touch Football Association is nearly set for another season on the gridiron.

The association recently held a meeting to finalize details for the upcoming campaign, one which is tentatively slated to begin Sept. 14 and run until Nov. 16.

Last year started off in difficult fashion, with uncertainty about field availability and a lack of true officiating leading to delays and the near cancellation of the season.

According to league president Chris Foley, things are looking much better this year as a sixth team has joined the fold with a possible seventh on the way.

While the six-team setup would be ideal, he admits the league will allow as many teams as possible.

“The six-team league really works well because with the uneven number of teams, one team always has a bye week,” Foley told The Western Star.

“Sometimes that’s good, but I know from experience that not a lot of guys like the bye week because you just get into it and all of a sudden, you’ve got a week off and the next week it always seems like you’re trying to get back into it.

“But we’ll accommodate as many teams as we can.”

As was the case last season, Foley expects officiating will be handled by the teams themselves, whereby teams take turns providing referees for a particular game.

With a year of experience operating under such a system and with teams making strides to put the best possible officials on the field at all times, he expects things to run more smoothly this time around.

“A lot of the team reps already have their officiating crews set for the season,” he said.
“Guys who have reffed before and know what they’re doing are going to be reffing the games when it their team’s turn, which is excellent.”

The association is hoping to play on the new Wellington Street Complex field, but should the recent vandalism problem at the facility force its closure, games will be held once again at Herdman Field.

One major change for the league this year relates to the playoff format. In previous years, the league held the semifinals and final on the same Sunday, which naturally gave the winner of the early game the advantage of rest prior to the final.

This year, the quarter-finals will be played one Sunday and the semifinals the next, with the ultimate goal of having the final played the following Sunday under the lights at the Wellington Street field.

Foley feels playing the new format will be fairer to all teams and will have the added bonus of boosting the exposure of the league by holding the biggest game of the year on the grandest stage in town.

“I went down and watched the final (senior men’s) soccer game between Curling (Rangers) and Stephenville (Clancy’s) and I couldn’t believe the fan support they were getting,” he said.

“I thought if football could get half of that this year, it would be great. I would love to see our league get a fan base like soccer has. We’ve always played on the old fields where there is no actual seating and a lot of people don’t want to stand up in the cold and watch a football game. Now you can go sit down, wrap yourself up and enjoy the game.”

League registration is ongoing and there is still room for new recruits on team rosters. For information, contact Foley at 638-4529.

Touch Football-Australia

WELCOME to my new weekly Touch Football column where I’ll be looking at local matches played as well as other news from around the grounds. If you have anything that may be of interest, you know where to find me.

The results from the mixed competition played on Monday, August 25 produced a mixed bag of results.

Division 1/2 saw Titans’ Alan Hilcher and Ron Craig proving too quick for Barnes Electrical coming away with the win 6 3.

Raine and Horne’s C Jarrott scored four super touchdowns but that was only enough to give them a 5-all draw with Sonia Eberles’ Touchy Feeleys who are coming together as a team now they are getting full numbers turning up.

CBH Steelers lead by the Baker family’s haul of five touchdowns came away with a hard-fought win 6 3 against Scott Toms’ seasoned performers, Think Office.

Sportscene scored a win on a forfeit over Dennis Black’s floggers.

HCT Storm had a good win over an under-strength Dregs side with 9 4

In Division 3, Grumpies got up 4 2 over a strong finishing Atlas Steel.

Stingrays, led by D Steel’s hat trick, got the points over David Fortier’s One Dental with a final score of 5 3.

The Earth Movers were lucky to get a win with a late touchdown and a blistering find of speed from S Gibbs to see him race down the side line untouched, when they came up against a red hot Actest.

Gibb’s mad dash secured the win for Earth Movers with a score of 5 4.

Green Pepper express won on forfeit over Chanel Chafers and we hope to see 3B cream on the park next week.

Division 4 saw E Services proving too strong for the Average Joes with a hat trick from Mat Forwood to take the score to 5-3.

Strachen Engineers’, lead by the ever-reaching Steve Strachen and a touchdown hat-trick to Alex Wilson, pounded 6 4.

Two touchdowns to QERL’s Tracey Morris made the going tough for Fanelli Dental but they hung on for a 3-all draw thanks to the non stop performances of Chantelle Lenz and Kerry Slack.

Jamie Rastricks’ The team had a close tussle with newcomers Lowrykins, but Rastrick’s second try secured the match for them 3-2 in the Division 5 rounds.

Signtek shared the scoring around to get a win over Jets and finished up with 4-2.

Tistan Neitfield scored a double for Luscombe 1 to secure a 4-1 win over Komatsu.

Rollers, led by Frank Larose, held on until the hooter to take the points from Pacemakers 4-3.

Carli Hobbs’ Observer team were celebrating well into the night after their tough win over Happy Rock Rockers 6 5 with a double from Craig Chapman closing the difference in the Division 6 games.

Bitsers 7 beat red Mud Maulers 3 with Scott Kerr (Bitsers) was crafty enough to snatch a hat-trick to keep the Maulers down.

Luscombe 2 were too strong for McCosker running away with a win of 6-2.

Chaos and Cement Aust shared the points with a 5-all draw.

The Division 7 games saw Rynos have enough in the legs to hold out the fast-finishing youth of Drifters with Teagan Lehmann giving it her all for Drifters.

The final hooter came too soon allowing Rynos the win 5-3.

Heidi Knights’ CH were unstoppable in a polished performance over Crash Test Dummies, taking the win 8-2.

The final game of the round had Vipers take on Alicia Williams’ Sothertons side.

This game proved a point fest with neither team giving in, however vipers ran away late to take the win 9-6.

!State Of Origin

!The Touch Football Australia State of Origin Series was played last weekend for all age divisions.

While Queensland ended the series in second place, our local girl Fiona White was a standout performer in the ladies over-40s.

Fiona’s side won the series against NSW, one of only four Queensland teams to win their divisions this year.

We were also represented in the referee ranks by Dale Lawrence, however he was struck down with the flu and was disappointed not to be able to finish the series.
