COLLINS, Miss. - PLAYER DIES PLAYING TOUCH FOOTBALL

A 16-year-old Collins High School football player died today (Monday) during an informal workout.

Witnesses say James Shorts the third collapsed after catching a pass and scoring a touchdown during a touch football game.

He was pronounced dead at Covington County Hospital after failed attempts to revive him.

Covington County school superintendent Ike Sanford says about 15 players and several coaches were at the school following a workout that was part of the team's voluntary summer weightlifting program.

Covington County Coroner Chris D'Aquila says the investigation into the boy's death was incomplete and an autopsy would be performed tonight (Monday) or tomorrow (Tuesday) in Jackson.

He says the cause of death is unclear.

Shorts was the team's punter last season and was expected to start on offense and defense for Collins this fall.

Assistant coach Jake Kyzar says there was no indication that Shorts was ill during the workout.

Sanford says he will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) with Collins football coach Bruce Merchant, principal Nick Hillman and other school officials to discuss Shorts' death.
